- |OK, a few questions for the OEMs and UART experts:
- |
- |o Why hasn't this UART shown up as yet in more PCs and serial boards?
-
- It's a rather new part...
-
- |o How long will it be before this chip completely usurps the 16550AFN and
- | the 16C550 clones?
-
- I'm not certain that it will completely usurp the 16550A; the 16550A
- is adequate for most users today, and a larger buffer doesn't offer an
- advantage unless you are experiencing overflow errors. The combination
- of larger buffers with on-chip flow control is an advantage - but only
- if software is designed to take advantage of it - which (right now at
- least) it isn't.
-
- |o Is the chip being sold anywhere at the retail level, as the NS16550AFN
- |was at a place like Fry's Electronics?
-
- I don't know..
-
- |
- |o Do software programs that already know how to activate the 16550AFN need
- |to be modified in *any* way to use the 16C750 effectively?
- |
- Yes - the extended features of the chip have to be activated by
- software that is knowledgable about the 16750. However, it does appear
- to be fully 16550A compatible.
-
- |Yes, I've been to the TI WWW site and I did an Alta Vista and a
- |MetaCrawler search. I didn't find much.
- |
- |I know that it exists and that it's being used a little.
- |
- |However, I'm not seeing it talked about, I'm not seeing it mentioned in
- |many FAQs, and I'm not seeing it in many real life products at my local
- |CompUSA, Computer City, Fry's, etc.
-
- We've mentioned it in some of our articles on our home page at
- http://www.comminfo.com.
- |
- |What's the story?
-
- It's not widely used today. Our PortInfo serial port diagnostic
- product is probably the only diagnostic that detects the 16750 and
- supports the extended features.
