  25. I'm not certain that it will completely usurp the 16550A; the 16550A
  26. is adequate for most users today, and a larger buffer doesn't offer an
  27. advantage unless you are experiencing overflow errors. The combination
  28. of larger buffers with on-chip flow control is an advantage - but only
  29. if software is designed to take advantage of it - which (right now at
  30. least) it isn't.

  41. Yes - the extended features of the chip have to be activated by
  42. software that is knowledgable about the 16750. However, it does appear
  43. to be fully 16550A compatible.

  59. It's not widely used today. Our PortInfo serial port diagnostic
  60. product is probably the only diagnostic that detects the 16750 and
  61. supports the extended features.
